This post won’t be one of those “where to go and what to see” posts as let’s be honest I am not qualified to give such recommendations on life in the big apple quite yet. This post is all about me trying to figure out in my own little way what it means to be a New Yorker, what is the essence of this city’s life and if it’s really as they say “the best city in the world”. After closing my 4th week here as a part tourist part freelance journalist and a domesticated supportive girlfriend I carefully observed the life style of the locals and these are some of the conclusions I came to:
1. All New Yorkers are BUSY. Being busy in New York is a religion, if a day goes by and you aren’t swamped with emails to reply to, drowning in phone calls to return and don’t have a list of at least 10 people to meet it means you haven’t lived through the day.
2. Too much of good thing is not always fabulous. New York is full of endless options, countless amounts of art galleries, concerts, shops, restaurants bars and the list of things to do and see goes on and on. Personally I can honestly say that after only a couple of weeks I found this infinity of possibilities rather overwhelming and got so exhausted trying to claim everything this town has to offer to a point where I just wanted to hide away and not see anything at all.
3. “Let’s have lunch sometime” New Yorkers love making social plans, meeting new people and starting conversations with random strangers are all part of the daily routine around here but when it comes to opening that diary and make an appointment it starts to be a little more tricky because well, because New Yorkers are so busy!
(See section 1)
4. “Run your way around town” Sport is an essential part of the life in New York, being fit and staying healthy is a priority around here, the streets of New York became the treadmill of it’s athletically enthusiastic citizens who wouldn’t miss a run in the park even after or before another rough day in the office.
5. “Mocka Choca latta ya ya” It won’t take you long to notice that locals are obsessed with holding cups of healthy beverages in their hands, weather it’s the latest hit – an iced green matcha or the classic Starbucks frapuccino with skimmed milk and extra cream on top with your name on it, one thing is is evident: New Yorker’s need to be hydrated is contagious.
6. Don’t forget to breath – Hands down, I am very much impressed and inspired with the high work ethics and the professional drive of people in this town but sometimes it feels like you are stuck in the “busy” loop, so please please New Yorkers let a Tel Avivian girl give you a tip: Don’t forget to breathe while you are working your way to the top!
